Brisbane Music Studio: Meet Our Strings Teacher

Gareth Mewes

Gareth Mewes (AmusA) is a violinist in his final year at the Queensland Conservatorium, studying a Bachelor of Music, majoring in Jazz. He has been performing since he was three, and performs as a Classical, Irish, Gypsy, Hip-hop and Jazz violinist. Gareth grew up in Bowral NSW, and learnt Violin with Scott Taggart at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.
Gareth started on Suzuki and AMEB methods as a young child, and branched into numerous other styles over the years. He played in the "Bluescope Steel Youth Orchestra" and the "Camarata Chamber Orchestra", between ages 12 and 18 and toured around Indonesia, Spain and parts of Asia with this orchestra. He toured as a soloist with the orchestra in Switzerland, Germany and France in 2010.
Moving to Brisbane in 2013, Gareth has untaken Violin studies in Classical and Jazz Violin and is currently on the final year of his Bachelor.
Gareth recently had the chance to perform on stage with Australian band "The Cat Empire", which inspired him to work on all sorts of styles of music. Gareth performs regularly with Gypsy-Jazz Ensemble "Cigany Weaver" and plays with multiple folk/alternative acts, such as Sian Evans of the "Rusty Datsuns" and experimental/electronic band "Desmond Cheese".
Gareth undertook a Suzuki method teacher training course in 2012, and has a passion for teaching and sharing music with people of all ages. His love of music is important in his teaching and he focuses on good technique while maintaining enjoyment in the instrument.
